Lecture 2: Introduction to Differential Equations with Power!!!
Dare your classmates to give me a C on that final paper!!!! LOL, it's only fair. Just kidding here :). I am definitely going to grade that poorly, but not too badly ;) As a little introduction to the topic, click here. (PDF version)
The Tutorial:
After following your lecture coverage for the two cases discussed in the first lecture, take five minutes or so to get yourself warmed up by solving problems using numerical solutions techniques. You can download our file "Hello World." It should be enough to explain what you're working with, let alone motivate the students taking action one minute after you show them! Once they feel confident enough about their abilities, move into the next problem. In this case, I recommend looking at an office's security system through the video camera of three automated teller machines (ATMs) displayed in the office. This will boost that students' confidence since visual cues like blinking lights and a camera will appear as they make connections between various components. Afterwards, they will try clicking buttons either located on or near the ATM devices until some kind of activity occurs. At last, after they notice something has happened, push the screen play button once again - basically, make contact and pay attention to how things run out of control... from there, we move right forward onto the next real world application example!! Sorry... I just had to vent my rage at one another for real. If it helps, I guess it *does* serve a purpose :-)!
Getting Results:
As always, proceed at your own pace! Just know that if the class does slow down, you will need to find better ways to keep your students interested without causing a distraction for everyone around. Some ideas include increasing the difficulty level of earlier parts while keeping the overall time required the same, assigning questions individually according to learning ability, giving positive feedback, getting involved in group projects if possible, posting test results back every week when available to check performance progress along with individual grades received thereafter--I am guilty of all of these myself!
