Calabasas High School Shootings

August 17 – At 9 p.m., two gunmen reportedly fled from a rented silver Corvette parked in front of Coggon Elementary School, killing a seven-year-old girl, leaving several injuries and escaping.

August 22 – A gunman opened fire on faculty and students from American Family Pediatrics & Adolescent Care Center, killing one student, injuring others. He also fired on employees at Allstate Insurance Company in nearby HarborTown Plaza. Six police officers returned fire and killed him; three other wounded victims were discharged from hospitals late that night. Two injured victims were students in kindergarten through second grade who died on scene. One of the victims was 7 years old at the time of the incident; the oldest victim was 48. Five of the wounded survivors—a man, a woman and three children ranging in age from 4 months to 5 years—were reported as being in stable condition.

All gunfire was silenced by high-intensity speakers installed near the school. Five times, members of law enforcement responded to calls reporting gunfire but could not locate the source of the sounds. Three hours later, officers discovered the cache of weapons stuffed in the trunk of the car belonging to former assistant football coach Jim Hayes McAllister (later convicted). However, as the gunfight dragged on through nearby streets, another student of McAllister's named Rick Martinez emerged with his own weapons, heavily armed. A bloodless debate held through the night over whether or not McAllister should be charged for allowing two handguns to remain hidden in his car has been widely recounted in news reports since the tragedy.
