In “Captain America And The Amazing Adventures of Captain America”, Stan Lee gets one final outing for his legendary creation thanks in large part to Rick Remender with penning. As ever, all the elements are there; a big brain, powerful magic spells, all manner of secret handshakes, lotsa villains and some smart dialogue for modern audiences. But “Death Of Superman” overcomes its heady mix of elements to make a worthy reading experience, even if it isn’t one we expect from DC anymore. Sure, it has their usual distractions included, like the return of Mister Fantastic, Captain Americawhilst Pete Dunne bemoans being locked inside and learns why he did fight through the Blob because no one else would save him... um, everyone except for Spiderman who turns up an hour later at the same place he always does. It’s a reasonable enough revenge plotline, one that ties into the issue’s overall conclusions quite neatly as Pete gets himself run down by a few cars, probably has heart surgery since it now looks like nobody cares if he lives or dies, shoots a guy, probably regrets killing guys again a couple issues later under a pair of fake new identities! A sadder version of this story could almost pass as one of those Dick Giordano teen novels. But then most great tales are. For every Frank Miller Hellboy/Fairy Tale or Robert Atack Cottontail Tales spinoff there should be several Stan Lee ones, because they were always silly but wonderful and fun, not just because they were so damned profitable. Plus they used to really fascinate me, seeing how a bunch of nobodies had all these superpowers and suddenly got insanely better on them after this special treatment!!
